How Much Does It Cost to Install Tile?

Each project has it's own challenges and a different scope of work, but a standard 8ft. x 10ft. room costs approximately $1,000-$1,500 to demo old carpet and install new floor tile. A standard 3.5ft. x 5ft. shower is more labor intensive and will cost around $2,000 - $2,500.

Average Cost By Area

Floor tiles are durable and made to last. These tiles can endure high-traffic and wet areas, residential or commercial. Floor layout, joint, or room overall area will change the cost of the installation.

Shower Tile: $18.00/sq. ft. - $30.00/sq. ft.

Tiling a shower is labor intensive. Underlayment and/or waterproofing methods, niches, benches, and tile design will affect tile installation cost.

Backsplash Tile: $10.00/sq. ft. - $20.00/sq. ft.

Backsplashes are commonly installed in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms above countertops. While its main purpose is to shield walls from water, it upgrades an area as well.

Bathtub Tile: $15.00/sq. ft. - $25.00/sq. ft.

Tub surround tile installation is similar to shower. Underlayment and/or waterproofing methods, as well as niches, and tile design will affect the price.

Wall/Wainscot Tile: $10.00/sq. ft. - $20.00/sq. ft.

Circumstances That Can Affect A Cost

Furniture And/Or Appliance Moving: $50.00 - $1,000

First, prior to the installation, all items have to be moved, and after the job completion, again moved back to its original place.

Dust And/Or Surface Protection: $50.00 - $500.00

Cabinets, A/C vents, and any other surfaces should be protected before any construction work begins.

Existing Surface Removal: $1.00 - $7.00/sq. ft.

Before tile installation, removing old surface can be time consuming. Removing tile or glue-down wood is much harder than carpet or laminate floor.

Bringing existing surface to industry standards: $1.00 - $7.00/sq. ft.

Out of level floors or out of plumb walls is another step that can increase cost of the project but it's necessary for quality tile installation.

Project Size

It cost more per square foot to install tiles in tight spaces than large, open rooms. A size of a project will determine a cost as well. A 40 - 50 sq. ft. bathroom floor vs 1,000 - 1.500 sq. ft. floor throughout a house will have different cost per square foot.

Post Installation Clean Up: $150.00 - $500.00

After job completion, there may be a need to clean the area from all the dust that was created during the installation.
